About this kúі

Kenes takes its name from the idea of counsel or a gathering — a coming-together — and the kúі has a measured, conversational feel, as if voices were answering one another. It is a traditional piece without a single named composer, carried down through the oral tökpe tradition rather than fixed by one hand.

Rated ★★☆ at ♩=140, it is a good step up from the beginner pieces. The eight sections move between the lower ré–sol register and brighter phrases higher on the neck, so the main work is in clean position changes and keeping the two answering ideas distinct. Practise each section at 0.75×, listen for the call-and-response between registers, and only raise the tempo once the shifts are smooth. It rewards a clear, unhurried touch more than speed.
