Adai

About this kúі

Adai is one of the most explosive kúіs in the whole dombra repertoire, written by Kurmangazy Sagyrbaiuly (1823–1896), the founder of the West Kazakh tökpe tradition. It is named after the Adai, a horse-breeding clan of the Junior Zhuz from the Mangystau region by the Caspian, and the music carries their reputation for boldness: a driving, headlong ride that barely pauses for breath from the first bar to the last.

At around ♩=210 it is one of the fastest pieces here, and its difficulty (★★★) is almost entirely in the right hand — a relentless torrent of even down- and up-strokes that must stay crisp as the left hand leaps between positions. Do not chase the tempo early. Practise in short sections at 0.5×, keeping every stroke the same weight, and only speed up once the position shifts are clean and automatic. Stamina and evenness matter far more than raw speed.
