Erkem-ai is a well-loved Kazakh folk song — the title is a tender term of endearment, roughly ‘my darling’ — arranged here for solo dombra. Where the kúіs are instrumental dramas, this is a song at heart: a simple, singing melody that anyone from the region would recognise, gentle and warm rather than showy.

Rated ★☆☆ at a relaxed ♩=100, it is among the easiest pieces here and a lovely way to practise phrasing. The two verses are nearly identical, so you really only learn one tune, then repeat it. Play it slowly at first and think of the words underneath the notes — let the melody breathe at phrase-ends rather than running straight through. Because it moves gently, it is a good piece for working on a clean, even tone on each stroke without the pressure of speed.
