Balbyrauyn

Balbyrauyn is one of the best-loved kúіs of Kurmangazy Sagyrbaiuly (1823–1896), the founder of the West Kazakh tökpe school of dombra playing. Its name suggests something supple and blossoming, and the music matches: a bright, dance-like piece that seems to laugh as it moves. The melody climbs the neck in rolling waves, the two strings answering each other, before returning again and again to the open ré–sol drone that anchors the whole kúі.

For the player it is a study in stamina and evenness. The right hand keeps a near-constant stream of down- and up-strokes in a fast 2/4, so the challenge is less about rare notes than about staying relaxed and rhythmically steady over more than 130 bars. Start well below tempo — around half speed — and keep the strokes light; let the open strings ring rather than forcing them. Once the shape of each phrase is under the fingers, bring the tempo up gradually. Rated ★★★, it rewards patient, repeated practice.
